TOWN OF RIB MOUNTAIN

Our rain garden comprised of a drain tile trench down the middle approximately 1 foot by 1 foot surrounded by pea rock. Sand was placed over the pea rock followed by 4-6 inches of topsoil and 2 inches of compost (processed so there were no weed seed). The compost was then tilled into the topsoil. We have tried using the Town’s yard waste compost in flower beds but there is too many weeds. Hsu’s sold us the compost – worked fantastic.

We also used filter fabric as a weed barrier. This added a lot of time to the install as we had to cut “x’s” for every plant (750 or so). Pea rock and walking pavers were placed around the plants. The rain garden was flourishing by the fall.

The Town of Rib Mountain installed a rain garden with a $750 grant from the NCWSC for the purchase of plants.  Total cost of the town’s rain garden installation was approximately $3,000.
